M\u00eame s\u2019il les entra\u00eenait \u00e0 observer les aspects g\u00e9ologiques de notre satellite, les explorateurs spatiaux n\u2019avaient ni la formation ni l\u2019intuition d\u2019un scientifique comme lui. Puis \u00ab les hommes de l\u2019espace \u00bb revenaient sur Terre : quelle frustration, sans doute, de voir les \u00e9chantillons rapport\u00e9s et de penser, m\u00eame involontairement, qu\u2019il pourrait aurait pu trouver des choses beaucoup plus fascinantes. En mars 1970, Schmitt est devenu le premier scientifique-astronaute \u00e0 \u00eatre assign\u00e9 \u00e0 un vol spatial, en int\u00e9grant l\u2019\u00e9quipe de secours de la mission Apollo 15. Plus tard, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sign\u00e9 comme membre de la mission Apollo 18, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des commandants Richard F. Gordon et Vance Brand.<\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\">Toutefois, la loi de Murphy est implacable, et les missions Apollo 18 et 19 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 supprim\u00e9es. Adieu au r\u00eave ? Pas du tout. Pour la communaut\u00e9 de g\u00e9ologues am\u00e9ricains, envoyer un scientifique dans l\u2019espace \u00e9tait fondamental. Ils se sont mobilis\u00e9s pour exercer des pressions sur l\u2019agence spatiale am\u00e9ricaine en\u00a0 lui demandant d\u2019inclure Schmitt dans une autre mission\u2026 et il a fini par prendre la place de Joe Engle dans la mission Apollo 17, la derni\u00e8re du programme.<\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\">L\u2019atterrissage du g\u00e9ologue sur la Lune un an plus tard a prouv\u00e9 l\u2019importance des scientifiques-astronautes. En plus d\u2019avoir pris une des plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres photographies de la Terre (connue comme <em>The Blue Marble<\/em>), Schmitt a collect\u00e9 un \u00e9chantillon de pierre (appel\u00e9\u00a0 Troctolite 76535) qui, selon l\u2019\u00e9quipe de la NASA, est \u00ab sans doute l\u2019\u00e9chantillon le plus int\u00e9ressant rapport\u00e9 de la Lune \u00bb.
